Czech composer Antonín Dvorák came to the United States to head the new National Conservatory of Music in New York and to discover "American music." He urged American composers to take inspiration from African American music, and his most popular symphony, From the New World, does just that. Taking inspiration from Dvorák's call to bring spirituals into the concert hall, the program features Adolphus Hailstork's Three Spirituals for Orchestra and showcases the Springfield Symphony Orchestra's Hellam Competition Winner.
